Mary Elizabeth Dukes

Sunrise July 4, 1932  *  Sunset February 10, 2021

Born in Enfield, North Carolina and raised by her parents Carl and Mary Parker. As an only child, she was a trailblazer to many of her first cousins who called her May Elizaber.

After she moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania  in the early 1940’s. She was educated in the Philadelphia school system, and later graduated from Dobbin High School. In 1950 she married Louis Dukes and from this union were 6 children. Louis preceded her in death.

Mary loved her family; being a community activist, and block captain. She enthusiastically served as Committee Woman in the 2nd Division of the 46th District between 1970"s in West Philadelphia, PA. As president of West Philadelphia High School Home and School Association, she actively worked with the Crisis Intervention Network to coordinate rallies to diffuse gangs and community safety.

After all, Mom took great pleasure as a homemaker, tailor/seamstress, who retired from the DSPA as a federal employee with several outstanding awards. After retirement she enjoyed sports, playing games on her computer, collecting odd pieces, vintage jewelry and reselling them by displaying them on her velvet lamp shades of which were always the topic of discussion. Her artistic ability to sew and design clothes for her family and robes for churches were other highlights of her genius gifts.

Mary’s Godly love and wisdom fulfilled her.  She was known for her priceless humoristic personality, which were an enormous inspiration to all that crossed her path. Therefore, now and always her love-light lives on in her children and family.

Relatives and friends were invited to her memorial service on Saturday, March 6, 2021 from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. at Francis Funeral Home, 5201 Whitby Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19143.
