James “Brett” Mason died Monday, March 9, 2021 in Apopka, Florida. He was 61 years old. Brett was born November 3, 1959 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, son of the late Burton “Burt” Mason and the late Beverly Mason (nee - Blissell). He is the beloved Pops of James “Blair” Mason, Ashley Mason, and Carlie Deshane, Justin Eames, Danielle Eames-Powe, Taylor Johnson, and Dahlia and Lily Jordan; grandfather of Mabel, Evie, Isla, and the newest additions, the twins Simon and Esmé; brother of Kitty Graham and her husband Paul, Keith Mason, Kimberly Mason, Linda Snow-Kuczewski, Burt Mason, David Mason and his wife Jody, the late Adam Mason, and the late Rodney Smith and his wife Charmaine. He is also survived by a loving extended family, including his nephews and nieces Tyler, Dustin, Jessica, and Jarod, Jamie Graham, whom Brett mentored, and Shaun Snow, with whom he shared a special musical bond, and an international collective of friends, artists, and musicians including Amanda Graham and Jamie Campbell, each of whom Brett had a deep admiration.

While Brett was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, from an early age he personified the old adage of “a rolling stone gathers no moss.” Highlights included time spent in New Orleans, Maine, Ohio, Florida, recently Pennsylvania to be closer to family, and finally Florida once more, and even still one would need an extensive roadmap to keep track of all the areas he’d called home in his life. In his travels, Brett both adopted people and culture from the locations he visited and left behind a legacy of friends and memories in his wake as his restless spirit moved him along from place to place.

By his very nature, Brett was a bit of a contradiction: he was both a lover and a fighter, able to take root easily and yet suddenly change direction on a whim, a philosopher at heart that was constantly searching for a way to expand his perspective. He was a self-described leftist if politics were concerned, and a spiritual atheist if his connection to the universe was a topic of discussion.
Brett’s true loves were in the arts as a man motivated to create, sing, play, and enjoy music of all types. He had a special fascination with childhood musical prodigies which in turn endowed his musical genes to his children and grandchildren, fostering a deep love in all three generations. Brett appreciated comedy and was a successful writer in his own right, reminding anyone that had a moment to listen that he was always working on his memoir in his free time. In his working years, when he wasn’t making or playing music, Brett was a renowned topiarest delighting clients and passersby with engaging and skillful landscape architecture.

Per the family’s request, services for Brett will be held privately.

Brett’s family hopes that you’ll consider making charitable donations in his memory to help continue his legacy of sharing and inspiring the gift to of music to either Play On Philly, P.O. Box 8662, Philadelphia, PA 19101, or The Roots of Music, 2624 Burgandy Street, New Orleans, LA 70117.
