Clarence Eugene Herbert was the eldest of eight children born on December 25, 1949 to Eugene Herbert and Eva Mae Grant Herbert in Bamberg, South Carolina. The family soon moved to New York and eventually settled in Brooklyn, New York.

A proud Brooklynite, Clarence was educated in the public schools of New York City, and enlisted in the United States Army in 1967, where he became a member of the 101st Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles and served in Vietnam. After his separation from the military, he worked in retail security, and then moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where he attended Northeastern University, and met his wife, Wendy. They moved to New York and together raised two children, Candace and David. The family moved several times and eventually settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Clarence found his true calling for mental health and social work in Boston, Massachusetts where he worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield, and as an Urban Court Mediator for the City of Boston. He further honed his skills by working for the City of New York and state of Florida in social services. He continued this trek by attending Villanova University with concentrations in Drug and Alcohol Abuse, and at Lincoln University where he received a Master of Human Services.

Clarence was a superb psychotherapist who helped many achieve their therapeutic goals. Clients often remarked how kind and responsive he was to their needs. He detested suffering and would give anyone the “shirt off his back.”

Clarence was an excellent dancer and enjoyed all types of music, was a dapper dresser, loved his colognes and jewelry. He also studied ancient history, philosophy, and cultures. He enjoyed traveling in the United State, Canada, the Caribbean, Central America, and Europe enjoying the exposure to new ideas and foods.

He is survived by his wife, Wendy Baynard Herbert; children: Candace, David, Shonda and Kenyatta; his father, Eugene Herbert; brothers: Ronald Herbert, LeRoy Herbert, Anthony Herbert, and Andre Herbert; sisters: Jenette Blackman, Deboreth Vazquez, Denise Williams, Lisa Crumpler, Patricia Bertram, and Judy Barnes; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
May his memory be a blessing.

Relatives and friends were invited to his memorial service on Friday, September 10, 2021 from 11:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. at Second Antioch Baptist Church, 912 North 41st Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104. His graveside service with military honors rendered by the United States Army followed at 2:30 P.M. at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA 18940.
