The following obituary was written by David's family.
David Joseph McDowell, of Glenside, PA, died peacefully at home on February 23, 2025 at the age of 71. He was born February 17, 1954 in Germantown, PA to Charles H. McDowell and Ruth E. McDowell (Styer) who preceded him in death. He was the beloved husband to Kristina Hauser McDowell for 47 years, cherished father of Peter D.(Rosemary), and Leah R. Belt (Corey), and devoted grandfather to Nash and Richard McDowell. He will be dearly missed by his five sisters; Judith McDowell (Doug) Mangapit, Linda Resh, Jeanette (Michael) Longenecker, Diane (Keith) Pennypacker, Laurie Muncy (Jim Dempsey), as well as all of his in-laws. He was a caring uncle to over thirty nieces and nephews. Dave valued a sense of humor, and lived out the Irish quote by poet William Butler Yeats, “There are no strangers here, only friends you haven’t yet met”.
Being the only boy in a house of five girls, Dave loved to play baseball, go bowling, was wrestling state champ in high school and athlete of the year, work on cars, and work creatively in wood. Dave mastered the craft of carpentry, though too humble to ever admit it. He set high standards for himself, always producing excellent quality, style and craftsmanship in his work. He had his own carpentry business for over 40 years and satisfied the call for custom carpentry from all his loyal customers. Dave attended K-12 in Centennial School District, graduating from Wm. Tennent High School in 1972. He entered the building trade upon graduation.
In addition to running his own business, Dave loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family in the great outdoors, biking, camping, traveling, hiking, playing ball, trying his hand at fishing, and enjoying the annual Glenside 4th of July parade.
Dave also was a devoted member of New Life Presbyterian Church in Glenside (NLG) for 47 years where he developed deep and lasting friendships with many who came alongside him and carried him, with love and devotion, through the last 5 years overcoming cancer and living with Alzheimer’s to which we are eternally grateful.
Dave assisted in the construction converting the Casa Conti to NLG in 1988 and many other capacities; Pioneer Boys leader, Building Committee member, Uganda mission trip, offering counter, and helping those in need with his construction skills.
Had he been able, upon retirement, Dave would have wished to use his time and skills to help those in need. We ask in lieu of flowers, to contribute to New Life Glenside-Deacons fund or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Relatives and friends were invited to David’s Memorial service on Sunday, March 2, 2025 at 2:00 PM at New Life Presbyterian Church Glenside, 467 N. Easton Road, Glenside, PA 19038. Reception followed.
In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to New Life Presbyterian Church Glenside Deacons Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association Tribute Fund.
