The following was composed by Ed’s family:

Ed Scanlan, a lifelong resident of Philadelphia and East Norriton, passed away on December 11, 2025.

Born Edmund Anthony Scanlan to Anthony “Ank” and Lauralys Scanlan on May 16, 1944, he was the fifth of seven children and grew up in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. Ed excelled in academics and athletics at Norwood Fontbonne Academy and St. Joseph’s Prep. His academic career continued at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Classics and later he earned a Masters Degree from Temple University.

After college, Ed joined the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and taught English for two years in Baghdad, Iraq. When he completed his service, he pursued his lifetime vocation of teaching and returned to his alma mater, St. Joe’s Prep, to teach Latin for over 30 years. At the Prep, Ed also served as the Director of Development for a decade, all while continuing to teach multiple classes.

Ed thoroughly enjoyed sports and games and, while living in Roxborough, would ride his bike to work. He also loved competing in tennis, playing bridge, participating in family board games, doing crossword puzzles, and religiously watching Jeopardy! from 7:00-7:30 every night (God forbid anyone called the house during that time!)

Ed’s greatest joy was time spent with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He delighted in playing games, creating pools, as well as writing limericks for his favorite people. With Ed, there was always a wager to place, a game to play, plenty of laughter, and fun to be had.

In 1970, Ed met Ann Flynn, his soulmate, and they married less than a year later. Their 55-year marriage was filled with love, travel, and family traditions, including annual trips to the shore and the mountains of PA and adventures abroad, including Italy and Ireland. Together they raised three children and built a legacy that includes one grandchild, extended grandchildren, many grand-dogs, and a family bound by love.

He is survived by his wife Ann Scanlan, children Tara Parkinson (Michael), Timothy Scanlan (Alma), Ed Scanlan Jr. (Katie), granddaughter Emma Grace Parkinson, step-grandchildren Nicole and Michael Parkinson, Jacob and Liza Eames.
